SBI PO Selection Process - Prelims, Mains and Group Exercise/Personal Interview

What is SBI? 

The State Bank of India is a self-governed body whose mission is to recruit the best candidates for banks in India through personal assessment in the areas of aptitude and accuracy. The SBI PO 2018 Exam is conducted every year to recruit Probationary Officers into the SBI Branches across India. This year would see the competition getting closer as the number of students appearing for SBI PO 2018 exam is set to cross 20 Lakhs. 

What is SBI PO? 

The SBI Probationary Officer (PO) Exam is divided into two phases, Prelims and Mains. The SBI PO 2018 Application Form and Notification has released online in the month of April 2018. The selection procedure for POs is as follows:

SBI PO 2018 Selection Procedure

  • Preliminary Examination
  • Main Examination ( Objective + Descriptive ) 
  • Group Exercise and Personal Interview

All aspirants need to clear the Prelims (Preliminary) exam first to go through to the Main Examination. The shortlisted candidates in Main Exam will be shortlisted for a Personal Interview. The final merit list will be prepared based on the marks obtained in the Mains Exam and the candidate’s performance in the Group Exercise and Personal Interview.

SBI PO 2018 Prelims Exam pattern

The SBI PO 2018 Prelims Exam paper consists of 100 questions, each carrying 1 mark split across 3 sections - Quantitative Aptitude, English Language, Reasoning Ability. SBI PO Prelims 2018 will have sectional time limits. However, it will not have sectional cutoffs.

The total duration of the exam is 1 hour. 100 questions in 60 mins seem difficult but this is where your preparation comes into the picture. Not just hard work, you also need to have a sound strategy to be able to do well in the SBI PO 2018 Exam.

SBI PO 2018 Main Exam pattern

The SBI PO 2018 Mains Exam consists of 200 questions split across 5 sections. Total time allotted is 140 minutes. The pattern is as follows:

SBI PO Descriptive Test

There's a descriptive test for 50 marks which tests your Letter Writing and Essay Writing Skills in the English Language. There is no negative marking for this section. The marks scored in the Descriptive Test will be considered for the final shortlist. Things to keep in mind for this section are 

  • The descriptive paper will test you both on Letter Writing and Essay Writing
  • The test starts as soon as you complete your objective paper. 
  • You will be given 15 minutes each to write your essay and letter on the screen
  • Keep taking online tests to acquaint yourself with the test-taking environment

Two important things to note are:

  • There will be a negative marking of 1/4th mark for every wrong question in both Prelims and Main Examinations. 
  • The marks obtained in Main Exam along with the Descriptive Test marks and performance in group exercise & personal interview will determine candidate's chances of getting into the final merit list. 

Group Exercise 

Group Exercise is a signature way of testing a candidate’s communication and presentation skills. So, how do you make yourself stand out in a group discussion? Here are a few tips that will help you in better preparation

Be a good listener

Be a team person

  • Make relevant points even if they are not long
  • Open the discussion only if you have considerable knowledge on the topic
  • Try to include people as much as possible. After all, the recruiters are looking for a team person. 
  • There will be people provoking you. Do not lose your calm. Stick to your point and try to persuade in a gentle manner. 

Speaking the right way

A Group Excercise doesn't require you to come up with loads of data and statistics. Be very attentive to the case/activity given and ensure that you are being calculative in your approach 

Personal Interview

The final frontier is the Personal Interview. It is a crucial part of the recruitment process as it defines you as a complete package for the lucrative SBI PO position. Be thorough with basics of Banking and all the common interview questions.
