1. An airplane covers a certain distance at a speed of 180 kmph in 4 hours. To cover the same distance in 2 and 1/3 hours, it must travel at a speed of:

A. 288 kmph

B. 360 kmph

C. 420.6 kmph

D. 308.5 kmph

Ans:    D

Explanation:

Distance = (180x 4) = 720 km.

Speed = Distance/Time

Speed = 720/(7/3) km/hr.  [We can write 2 and 1/3hours as 7/3 hours]

Required speedd=(720*(3//7))kmph=308.5 kmph

2. Two students appeared at an examination. One of them scored 8 marks more than the other and his marks were 60% of the sum of their marks. The marks obtained by them are:

A. 24,16

B. 25, 18

C. 16, 13

D. 15, 25

Ans: A

Explanation:

Let their marks be (x+ 8) and x.

Then, x+8 = (60/100)(x+8+x)

25(x+ 8) = 15(2x+ 8)

5x= 80

x= 16

So, their marks are 24 and 16.

3. A can do a work in 40 days and B in 28 days. In how many days will both A and B complete the same work by working together? Mark the approximate answer.

A.  14 days

B.  10 days

C.  16 days

D.  20 days

Ans:   C

Explanation:

A's 1day's work = 1/40

B's 1day's work = 1/28

They work together = 1/40 + 1/28 = 16 days

4. A bag contains 50 paise, 25 paise, and 10 paise coins in the ratio 5: 9: 4, amounting to Rs. 206. Find the number of coins of each type respectively.

A. 360, 160, 200

B. 160,200,360

C. 200,360,160

D. 360,200,160

Ans.   C

Explanation :

let ratio be x.

Hence no. of coins be 5x ,9x , 4x respectively

Now given total amount = Rs.206

(.50)(5x) + (.25)(9x) + (.10)(4x) = 206

we get x = 40

No. of 50p coins = 200

No. of 25p coins = 360

No. of 10p coins = 160

5. Ram's age after 11 years will be 5 times his age 5 years back. What is the present age of Ram?

A. 8 years

B. 9 years

C. 10 years

D. 11years

Ans:    B

Explanation:

Present age = x (assume)

x+11 = 5(x-5)

<=> 4x = 36 => x = 9 years

6. Teena is younger than Rani by 6 years. If the ratio of their ages is 6:8, find the age of Teena.

A. 18 years

B. 16 years

C. 17 years

D. 19 years

Ans:    A

Explanation:

If Rani age is x, then Teena age is x-6,

so (x-6)/x = 6/8

8x-48 = 6x

2x = 48

x = 24

So Teena age is 24- 6 = 18 years

7. In the first 12 overs of a cricket game, the run rate was only 4. What should be the run rate in the remaining 30 overs to reach the target of 250 runs?

A. 4.25

B. 6.7

C. 5.3

D. 7.1

Ans:    B

Explanation:

Runs scored in the first 12 overs = 12 × 4 = 48

Total runs = 250

Remaining runs to be scored = 250 - 48 = 202

Remaining overs = 30

Run rate needed = 202/30=6.7

8. A library has an average of 540 visitors on Sundays and 270 on other days. What is the average number of visitors per day in a month of 30 days beginning with a Sunday?

A. 290

B.325

C.315

D.285

Ans:    C

Explanation:

In a month of 30 days beginning with a Sunday, there will be 4 complete weeks and another two days which will be Sunday and Monday.

Hence there will be 5 Sundays and 25 other days in a month of 30 days beginning with a Sunday

Average visitors on Sundays = 540

Total visitors of 5 Sundays = 540 × 5

Average visitors on other days = 270

Total visitors of other 25 days = 270 × 25

Total visitors = (540 × 5) + (270 × 25)

Total days = 30

Average number of visitors per day

=(540×5)+(270×25)/30

=(54×5)+(27×25)/3

=(18×5)+(9×25)=90+225=315

9.  A man buys a book for Rs.29.50 and sells it for Rs 31.10. Find his gain percent

A.  6.1%

B.  5.4%

C.  3.8%

D. 4.4%

Ans:   B

Explanation:

So we have C.P. = 29.50

S.P. = 31.10

Gain = 31.10 - 29.50 = Rs. 1.6

Gain%=(Gain/Cost∗100)%

=(1.6/29.50∗100)%=5.4%

10. The four walls and ceiling of a room of length 30 ft, breadth 16 ft, and height 10 ft are to be painted. A can paint 225 sq.ft. in 4 days, B can paint 260 sq.ft. in 3 days. if A and B work together, in how many days will they finish the job?

A.9.8 days

B.6.8 days

C.7.8 days

D.5.8 days

Ans:   A

Explanation:

Total area to be Painted:30*16+2(10*16+10*30)=1400 sq.ft

A paints=225/4=56.25 sqr.ft per day

B paints=260/3=86.6  sqr.ft per day

A+B=56.25+86.6=142.8 sqr.ft

Number of days = 1400/142.8= 9.8 days
