Why should I read this blog?
The first step in taking a test is to understand the test-pattern. Once this is known, one will be able to identify the areas of preparation. Also, test-pattern helps in fine-tuning the preparation strategy. A few tests will have different sections and the others will have different kinds of questions. The fundamental concepts of Quantitative, Verbal, Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning and General Knowledge will remain the same. Though, the application differs.
CAT 2018 Test Pattern – There are three sections as seen:
|Section 1||Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension||60min|
|Section 2||DI & LR||60min|
|Section 3||Quantitative Ability||60min|
Each section will have a time limit of 60 minutes i. e. you cannot switch between sections.
The sections will be in the same order as shown in the table.
The TYPE-IN-THE-ANSWER-QUESTIONS (TITA) questions will continue to feature in CAT 2018 as well.
Each correct answer to a question in the exam will carry 3 marks.
For MCQ type questions, each incorrect attempt will lead to a negative marking of 1 mark.
For non-MCQs or TITA (Type In The Answer) questions there will be no negative marking.
CAT 2018 will continue to have the basic on-screen calculator.
CAT 2018 will almost follow the CAT 2017 pattern.
CAT 2017 Pattern:
|S.No.||Section||MCQs||TITA||Total number of Questions||Total Marks||Time allotted for each section (in minutes)|
|1||Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension||24||10||34||102||60|
|2||Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning||24||8||32||96||60|
The NMAT by GMAC™ exam is computer-delivered and gives each candidate a randomly generated test from a pool of questions, delivered one-at-a-time.
The NMAT by GMAC™ exam has three sections –
Refer the below table for a detailed break-up of number of questions and allotted time.
|Language Skills||32 questions||22 minutes|
|Quantitative Skills||48 questions||60 minutes|
|Logical Reasoning||40 questions||38 minutes|
|Total||120 questions||120 minutes|
Test takers can choose the order of sections.
Each of the three sections is individually timed.
Test takers need to answer and review the questions of a particular section within the allotted section time.
+3 for a correct answer.
No negative marking for incorrect answer.
NO ABILITY TO RETURN TO A SECTION AFTER LEAVING IT:
Test takers need to answer the questions of each section within the allotted section time.
Once the test taker completes a section, whether the test taker selects to move to the next section or if time runs out, the test taker will not be able to return to that section.
