CAT Exam - Tips and Tricks on Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation

The clock is ticking towards the d-day! The days are pacing and the minutes are slipping fast from your hand. The date of CAT has been fast approaching and most of you are perplexed with the preparations. What is the one thing coming in between you and your dream of cracking CAT? For most of you out there, it's the demon of 'Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation' section right? In this time of high pressure don't you need a guiding hand taking you towards the steps of success? Yes, we feel you. In all the sections we have in the CAT, Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation has become the most difficult one over the past few years. The reason behind it is pretty simple and straightforward. All the reputed IIMs want to test the overall ability of the MBA aspirants.

A lot of students who get through the other sections with flying colors, somehow fail to clear the cutoffs in the LRDI section. The sectional cut-off introduced in CAT is also not helping the students clear the exam. Without clearing this sectional cut off, they end up missing out on a great opportunity of entering the business school of their choice. To not let you suffer the fate and end up scoring well in this section, we have prepared a study module answering the elusive question of - 'How to ace the LRDI section of CAT' and a lot more to help you through the last 30 days of the exam.

Structure of the LRDI section

If you analyze the data from the past years the Logical Reasoning and Data interpretation respectively take 1/6th of the CAT. Till the year 2014, LRDI questions were part of the Verbal Ability sections, but from the time it has been made into a separate section, high importance is given to it. The LRDI section of CAT includes around 32 questions. These 32 questions are split across 8 sets consisting of 4 questions each. There is an hour of time that can be dedicated to this particular section in the CAT. In these 32 questions, 10 questions will be of 'type in the answer' kind and the rest are MCQs.

To achieve a decent score in this section and clear the cut-off, one must be able to choose the right sets to attempt. The key to success lies your discretion to manage time along with accurately answering the questions. While attempting this LRDI section, one must keep in mind that it is highly impossible for you to answer all the questions correctly. So, choose the kind which you can solve in lesser time with higher accuracy. This can only be achieved through practice and awareness of the kind of questions that might be asked. This brings us to the syllabus for this section. This is also where most of us are lost, as there is no specific pre-defined syllabus for any section of CAT. But after scrutinizing the previous years' papers, we came up with the list of topics that are much likely to be questioned on in the CAT.

Topics for LRDI section of CAT

Level 1

  • Coding – Decoding
  • Number Series
  • Letter Series
  • Symbol Series
  • Symbol-based Logic
  • Number & Alphabet Analogies
  • Odd one out
  • Direction Sense
  • Blood Relations / Family Tree
  • Cryptarithmetic (Verbal Arithmetic)
  • Inequalities and Conclusions – Coded Inequalities
  • Data Sufficiency
  • Approximation of Values

Level 2

  • Bar Graphs
  • Pie Charts
  • Tables
  • Binary Logic – True / False statements based questions
  • Pan Balance / Spring Balance
  • Linear and Circular Seating Arrangements
  • Matrix and Grid-based Arrangements
  • Games and Tournaments
  • Sequential Output
  • Logical Conditions (If this, then that)
  • Logical Grouping – Questions based on Team Formation
  • Critical Path
  • Cubes based problems
  • Matchstick / Coin picking based problems
  • Dice Related Problems
  • Order and Ranking
  • Quant Based LR Puzzles

It should be noted that these are the topics which the questions might be based on. As the syllabus for CAT is varied and wide it is hard to pinpoint on a bunch of topics.

Preparation Strategy

There are three key paths that can lead to your success in the LRDI section of CAT. Firstly building of concepts, practice and attempting mock tests to see how far your practice comes to play.

Concept Building

To master this, you need to understand the process that goes into solving questions. Invest some time in identifying the concepts and work your way through them. While attempting a question, don't assume more information than the question already provides you. You have to catch the logic behind it. When a question has words such as all, some or none, other than, only and unless aim at carefully deducting the logic behind it. Be sure to understand the prefixes like non-, un-, and dis-. Apart from these in Logical Reasoning, there is an ocean of topics that you have to study for Data Interpretation. It is possible that you as a CAT aspirant might think solving a pie chart is a pretty basic activity, but trust me – even the simplest pie-charts can bamboozle you under pressure. This is when a video tutorial of an expert teaching you can help.

Practice

After you have a clearer picture of the concept building, you need to do rigorous practice towards achieving accuracy. This is the time where you have to balance between your accuracy and speed in solving the questions. Practice all the questions given in the previous papers of CAT. Some of those questions, especially from the earlier years might seem simple but they would help you develop the necessary skills required to ace the LRDI section.

Attempting and Analyzing Mock Tests

Solving mock tests not only familiarize you with the test motif but also makes you confident in giving the exam. It gives you a glimpse of the real exam scenario which helps you in time management also. In the study module that we are providing for this year's CAT, you can find in numerous mock tests for not just the LRDI section but also for the Quantitative Ability and the Verbal Ability as well.

With just 30 days left for CAT, the preparation should be rigorous and strategic. We understand the dilemma a student faces as we interact with a lot of CAT exam aspirants. Get Study plan and tips on how to score 90+ percentage in CAT Exam

Parring the hurdle of 90+% is the dream of most of the CAT aspirants. In this last leg of preparation, most of us are stuck at a percentage and growth seems to take a snail's pace. But the fire to achieve the mark of 90+% and get into your dream IIM is still burning up inside. This is where you need a guiding hand in the path of success and where we come into the picture. Read on this blog to find out the cues to achieve what you've been dreaming of all the while.

Scoring above 90% in CAT seems like a tough catch but in fact is easily achievable. All you have to do is make your basic fundamentals strong and know the pattern of the exam like the back of your hand. After the sectional cut-off has become mandatory, it is imperative for every CAT aspirant to distribute equal importance among all the sections. The quantitative ability section is probably the most important section in any competitive exam. Similarly, quantitative ability section is included in CAT also. The quant section in CAT is designed in such a way that it tests the complete skillset and capabilities of MBA aspirants. In CAT quantitative aptitude section, 34 questions are included. The problem arises with the syllabus for the section as it is vast and not pre-defined.

The pattern of the Quantitative Ability section

As we've seen the total number of questions given in this section are 34, which carry 102 marks as a whole. The type of questions asked in this section is MCQs and non-MCQs. There are usually 24-26 MCQs and 8-10 non-MCQ type of questions out of the total 34 questions. The level of difficulty in both the kind of questions is moderate. The marks awarded for a correct answer is 3 and deduction for a negative answer is 1. Here, note that non-MCQ type of questions will not have any negative marking.

Preparation Strategy

As CAT doesn't have a pre-defined syllabus, most of the students face problem during the preparation. But if you carefully scrutinize the previous years' papers of CAT, you can observe the pattern of topics which are frequently repeated. The quantitative ability section is where numerical questions are asked aiming to test the mathematical skills, accuracy, and speed at which rate the candidate is performing. The questions in quant for the CAT are related to basic and elementary mathematics and require the candidate to be completely acquainted with the fundamental concepts to solve them. In CAT, the quantitative ability is a separate section and thus, a separate sectional timing is present in which the candidates are required to solve the related questions.

The more practice you do, the more familiar you'll get with the concepts. The numerical questions require proper practice to be able to solve the related questions. As the questions are sometimes tricky, a proper practice can ensure that all the questions in the exam can be attempted and solved.

Solve as many mocks as you can

Solving mock tests not only familiarize you with the test motif but also makes you confident in giving the exam. It gives you a glimpse of the real exam scenario which helps you in time management also. Solving the previous years' papers will help you carefully analyze the test pattern and identify the difficulty level.

With numerous applications received by CAT every year, the competition has also grown exponentially. so, you are required to be well-focussed and dedicated to the exam. As there are just 30 days left for the exam, you need to go brush up your strong spots rather than preparing new concepts. With honest preparation, the dream of IIM can easily be achieved.
